Moms Who Travel with Style

In honor of Mother’s Day, CNT chatted with bloggers, photographers, and moms Mimi Thorisson of Manger, Emily Harteau of Our Open Road, and Elise Hanna about their travel essentials, their favorite trips, and where they’re going next. This is an excerpt from the original. Read the entire article via link at bottom.

WHAT ACCESSORIES DO YOU ALWAYS TRAVEL WITH?

Emily: Raen sunglasses for me, Ergo pack, Bumbleride Flite stroller for airports and if we are going anywhere with sidewalks, and Ultra Violet Kids clothes so the girls look great.

Mimi: My sunglasses, a brand-new notebook, and music to listen to. Also a Nuxe travel-size pouch; it contains all the essential products when traveling (you can get them in French pharmacies).

Elise: My camera, one or two good versatile cotton scarves (which can be used for anything from a picnic blanket to a baby-changing pad, head covering or skirt), my iPhone, and a journal or simple notebook.

Bumbleride Ambassadors – The Harteaus– Argentina & Chile

Adam and Emily can most often be found on a distant family adventure in their Westfalia van appreciating the outdoors and their communities. Join them as they share their travels, artwork and amazing imagery, http://ouropenroad.com/.  Our Open Road’s goal is to inspire others to create, eat well, spend quality time together, and adventure into their own great backyards. This is the latest post in our Bumbleride Ambassadors blog series where we share active and outdoor families’ experiences with their Bumbleride stroller(s).

Please tell us about yourselves.

Adam & I met in Los Angeles at Otis College of Art & Design where I studied fashion design & Adam studied fine art.   Adam just had an exhibition in Los Angeles in October inspired by two years on the road- http://ouropenroad.com/terraincognita/ .  I have enjoyed having time to explore some of my other interests like cooking & writing.  Each of our blog posts is like a chapter in a book and I have been working on a cookbook for a very long time now…

Please tell us about your families’ love for travel.

We have traveled together for over a decade, always dreaming and planning our next adventure. When Emily was pregnant with Colette, Adam was working on a project that would have put us in India and Nepal for 6+ months. When that fell through, we knew the time had come for us to plan our own grand voyage. It was born naturally of a dream we developed together and wanted to share with Colette. It took over a year of saving and fundraising, planning and preparing before we departed.   The greatest gift this trip has presented is time. We have time to be together and time to explore the rich cultural landscapes; our hearts and minds have been filled by kind and generous locals and stunning natural beauty with unforgettable vistas.   Slowing down to enjoy these things has been a gift. We use all our senses to experience the day and do not expect magic moments to appear instantly.

Which countries stand out for most memorable highlights with your children? Do you have a favorite country to recommend to US/Canadian families with little ones?

Sierra’s birth in Brazil was a remarkable time on the road and has granted her dual citizenship, which we think is the coolest birthday gift ever.
My top 5 recommendations for traveling families:

1) Buenos Aires is not just a city for lovers, it is also a great city to visit with families:  parks, museums, galleries and yummy restaurants abound.

2) Conguillío and Huerquehue National Parks in the Chilean Lakes District are enchanting.  Hiking with kids has such a balancing effect, all while burning that energy they have!

3) Uruguay is a small, safe country that is easy to travel in- the east coast is especially dreamy.

4) Cartagena, Colombia is a wonderful small city where the light seems to dance on every corner.

5) The Big Island of Hawaii is like our second home, and is a phenomenal place to visit with kids- sea turtles, golden sand and tropical water – what more could anyone ask for?

Bumbleride Indie 4 Best All-Terrain Stroller BabyCenter

11 Luxe Strollers That Are Really Worth It

In life, there are things you want and things you need. Strollers straddle that line. You need one, that’s for sure, especially if you’re a city dweller.

But if you’re going to be pushing something around day in and day out for several years, you want it to be as easy on the eyes as it is to maneuver. You want a thing of beauty and luxury, not just utility. That’s where these 11 standouts come in. Consider them the SUVs of strollers: multifunctional and a bit showy but for many families, the perfect marriage of want and need.

“The Bumbleride Indie 4 Urban All Terrain Stroller with Bassinet can cruise over any bump with barely a jolt, thanks to air-filled tires and all-wheel suspension. It’s got a cushy seat and an adjustable handlebar, backrest, and footrest — so both baby and parent are comfy; $600.” -Liz Krieger

Bumbleride Ambassador – Ladena Racine

Bumbleride Ambassador – Ladena Racine – Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Ladena can most often be found on a family adventure while sharing her favorite products, crafts, recipes and travel tips on her website along the way, http://www.mybabystuff.ca/. This is the latest post in our Bumbleride Ambassadors blog series where we share active and outdoor families’ experiences with their Bumbleride stroller(s)

Please tell us about yourself and a little bit about your family
I am an elementary school teacher and mom of two kids. My husband is a graphic designer and business owner. As a family we love being active and outside. We are passionate about traveling and exposing our children to new cities, beaches and cultures.

What was the motivation behind starting/running MyBabyStuff.ca?
I have always been one to share my love of great products and experiences with my friends and family. When I was pregnant with my second child I started noticing that there was an abundance of great products available for babies. I wanted to figure out what products were a necessity, what products were worth purchasing and what products were of good quality. I thought it made perfect sense to share my thoughts on baby gear with the world by testing some out and reviewing products that would be suitable to today’s family. MyBabyStuff.ca started with mostly baby products but soon evolved with children and parent products. It now also has a growing family travel section where I highlight and chronicle trips and quick getaways I’ve done with my family.

What do you love about living in B.C and how does Bumbleride fit into your family’s lifestyle there?
British Columbia is a very special place. On the west coast of British Columbia you could literally surf on Saturday and ski on Sunday. We have an incredible landscape and are surrounded by water. Our weather is mild all year long. Bumbleride has been a perfect fit for my family since 2007. The first Bumbleride we owned was the Rocket which I used with my now seven year old daughter.  I have since owned a Bumbleride Indie and a Flite.

Bumbleride strollers make it easy for a mom to get outside and get active with their children. They are designed for active living, are easy to maneuver and look so stylish. I’ve taken my Bumbleride strollers on trails, to the beach and on many plane rides. Bumbleride strollers have allowed my family to navigate through many big cities with ease and are perfect for a quick trip to the grocery store.

What do you love about your Bumblerides?

“I’ve tested the Bumbleride Indie and the Bumbleride Flite. I couldn’t live without both strollers. Recently, Bumbleride sent me the Indie 4 in Fog Grey. I was so excited to put this new model to the test. I had seen the Indie 4 in stores and on the streets and I really wanted to know how it performs.”

Things Ladena loves about the Indie 4:

  • The large SPF 45 canopy
  • The large storage basket (I put three winter jackets in it last week!)
  • The maneuverbility
  • The sleek look
  • The air filled tires
  • The cushion on the adjustable handlebar
  • The option of using a bassinet
  • It only weighs 22lbs and has a capacity of 55lbs

“The Indie 4 is such a cool looking stroller. It makes me WANT to go out for walks. This stroller rolls smoothly and feels really small. I can push it with one hand. It turns on a dime. When I go out with both my kids I usually attach the Mini Board onto the Indie 4. Adding the Mini Board does not affect the performance of this stroller.” -Ladena

Talking with Ryan Willson about the Environment, Plastics, Pollution and How We Can Help

April 10th, 2015

Talking with Ryan Willson about the Environment, Plastics, Pollution and How We Can Help.

“Being mindful of the environment and our impact as a manufacturer of strollers for babies is really important to us at Bumbleride. Ryan who heads up marketing is one of our major advocates and drivers of this in our company. So I wanted to pick his brain on plastics, pollution and what we can do.” – Matt Reichardt, CEO/ Co-Founder

Matt:  How has growing up in San Diego and going to college in Hawaii affected your view of the environment?

Ryan: Growing up in San Diego our family spent much of our free time at the beach where we were taught at an early age to leave the beach a cleaner place than we found it. Living in Hawaii amplified how important that rule is. Being an avid surfer, learning about Hawaiian history and seeing first-hand how families live off the land, I was able to get a better understanding of how critical the environment can be to daily living.

Matt:  You were recently featured by the Surfrider Foundation for your efforts to reduce plastics on our beaches can you tell us about that?

Ryan: I love hosting and participating in beach cleanups so when I saw that Method products was starting a program for Coastal Cleanup Day to upcycle ocean plastics into product containers I jumped at the opportunity to help. Method has an Ocean Plastic line of dish & hand soap bottles where a % of the bottles are made with upcycled ocean plastics, not just recycled plastics like most of their other products, http://methodhome.com/beyond-the-bottle/ocean-plastic/. With the support of the local San Diego Surfrider chapter and friends, we were able to fill a large pallet size container in a couple months. We look forward to filling up another container or two this year. Surfrider was kind enough to share about our efforts on their website here, https://sandiego.surfrider.org/a-local-members-efforts-to-alleviate-the-plastic-pollution-crisis .

Matt:  What do you see as the major environmental issues facing us today and what impact do you see manufacturing have?

Ryan: Pollution (air, water and soil) and natural resource depletion are two of the largest issues facing us today. Most manufacturing has a negative impact on these issues which is why there is a huge opportunity for more sustainable and responsible options. As more companies show working examples of responsible manufacturing, it will soon become the norm.

Matt:  How is Bumbleride working to reduce their footprint or impact on this crisis?

Ryan: At Bumbleride we are constantly evaluating our footprint. Part of the Bumbleride Promise is our commitment to responsible design which means we are mindful about the factories we work with and materials we choose. Currently we manufacture our fabrics with recycled materials and bamboo charcoal fiber but we’re researching new manufacturing processes and materials that reduce water and energy use even further. We recycle as much as possible at our offices and encourage public transit or cycling to work. We recently worked with the City of San Diego and their Green Business Network program to audit our energy in the office. They recommended improvements which we were able to take advantage of for free thanks to San Diego Gas & Electric.

Matt:  What can we do individually to help contribute to a cleaner community locally?

Ryan: The biggest things you can do to help keep your community clean is by reducing and refusing. Reduce and refuse: single use plastic bottles (water, soda, tea, etc), plastic straws, plastic grocery bags and disposable silverware or plates. Another great way to help your community is to join a local group like the Surfrider FoundationI Love a Clean San DiegoSan Diego Coastkeepers , Sustainable Coastlines or Shoreline Cleanup (Canada). Buying items in bulk reduces plastic waste and if you see a piece of trash or plastic in the street or gutter, pick it up and simply wash your hands later. Urban runoff is the largest pollution source for our oceans and waterways.

Matt:  I know you love surfing, what’s your favorite breaks around San Diego?

Ryan: Some of my favorite surf breaks in San Diego are Blacks, Trestles and Ocean Beach \m/.

Lucie’s List- Best All Terrain Double Stroller – Indie Twin Review

Indie Twin Aquamarine

Best All Terrain Double Stroller – Indie Twin Review

“The Bumbleride Indie Twin is a cult favorite.

The four GIANT air-filled tires make it feel like you’re pushing a cloud (one-handed, even), which is a difficult claim to make for a double side-by-side stroller of this bulk. Speaking of size, this stroller is 29.5” wide, which will get through a standard door frame (but not with the cup holder on the side, oops!)….

Both seats recline independently and nearly flat, so you can use it from birth, even without a car seat or bassinet. The seats have adjustable leg rests, which are especially great for infants, and the total weight capacity is 90 lbs, or 45 lbs in each seat.

Bottom line: The Bumbleride Indie Twin is a favorite among twin parents and parents of two, especially those needing the giant tires that can plow through anything. While it’s not great for jogging and requires some muscle to fold, this stroller tops the charts for beauty, storage capacity, suspension, ease of pushing, and usability. Let’s not forget Bumbleride’s excellent customer service. Hurrah!” -Meg Collins. Read the entire in-depth Indie Twin review at http://www.lucieslist.com/best-all-terrain-double-strollers/ .

Bumbleride Ambassador – Kristy Mclellan

April 6th, 2015

Bumbleride Ambassadors McLellans

Bumbleride Ambassador – Kristy Mclellan – Ridgewood, New Jersey

Kristy and her family can most often be found enjoying the outdoors or a local soccer field. This is the latest post in our Bumbleride Ambassadors blog series where we share active and outdoor families’ experiences with their Bumbleride stroller(s).

Please tell us about yourself.
I’m East Coast born and raised outside of New York City, but there is an inner California beach girl in me that is begging for a relocation to the ocean!  I’m a happily married Mom of three girls – Chloe (6) and our twins – Charley & Presley (18 mths) and I’m passionate about creating a healthy, safe and beautiful home for them.  I come from a Marketing background and worked for some pretty big, bold face name companies honing my skills and working with so many talented people before launching my own business with my partners.  I love design, great food and hanging out with family and friends.  My favorite time of year is Fourth of July – as a family we head to the same little cottage in Maine every summer to unwind.  No cell phones, computers or distractions.  We get to just be a family and enjoy simple things like a fire pit and smores making. I’m already dreaming of next summer.

What was your inspiration for co-founding your company?
I think most people in this industry become inspired by their kids and looking for ways to make the parents’ world easier and their child’s world better.  In our case we were living in New York City looking for a way to keep our stroller, which we used like a car, clean before bringing it into our apartment. I couldn’t bare the thought of taking it apart to get formula stains out again or listening to my wheels squeak.  I was shocked that no non-toxic, organic solutions existed so we created our own. Simple as that, BuggyLOVE was born.

How are you able to balance family & work?
They say it takes a village to raise a family and we’ve created an amazing village of support from hands-on Grandparents to old friends and new ones.  We love that our children are constantly surrounded by a whole lot of love and individual influences.  Aside from the support we do what most families do – we create a really solid schedule to ground us, but allow ourselves to be flexible and have fun within it.  It really helps us to have a great work – life balance, stay organized in business and make special time for each girl.

What do you love most about being a parent?
I love that I am the only one who can cure their boo boo with a kiss.  I think there is a really sweet metaphor in there about the kind of power that a Mom’s love has and how it helps shape these little lives.

I’ve been lucky enough to have had experienced both personal and professional success.  But being a Mom comes with a whole new level of pride I ever knew existed.  All three of our girls were born prematurely, the twins at only 26 weeks.  When they were first born no Doctors could guarantee how they would course and develop. It’s been amazing to watch these little miracles be so fearless and accomplish milestone after milestone. From first steps and words to twirling in princess costumes and scoring a soccer goal, I feel such a sense of pride through their successes, big and small.  I want to slow down time, but I can’t wait to see the amazing women they turn into.  I always say being a Mom is the best club you can ever join.

What do you love about your Bumbleride?

As founders of BuggyLOVE and parents to three girls, one year-old twins, Charley & Presley and big sis, six year-old Chloe our life is one of a happy, controlled chaos and most definitely, always on the go.

Charley & Presley were born at only 26 weeks and after a three-month stay in the NICU came home to us tiny, but as perfect as could be.  Naturally, going from parents of one to parents of three we were nervous about how on earth we would handle it all and balance the energy of our oldest with the needs of our preemies.

And just as we were about to commit myself to a life of car seat strapping in and out and a six year old with tired feet or worse yet, limiting our outings, our Bumbleride Indie Twin with the mini board arrived at our door.  What.  A. Gift.

It gave me comfort to know my little ones were safely snuggled in side by side and that their delicate heads and bodies weren’t bounced around with every bump.  As they grew up their Indie Twin grew right along with them and the ride of their life was as smooth as ever.  From car-seat adapters to bassinets to their “big girl” seats with views of the world our Bumbleride Indie Twin has worked for our family since the day they came home.  Big bonus #1 – that big sis feels like a super hot shot with the freedom of jumping on and off her mini board.  Big bonus #2 – that we can load all three girls up and move as quickly as our life does.  I’m pretty sure our greatest achievement last year was being on time to Kindergarten everyday; thanks in no small part to our Indie Twin with mini board.

As a CoFounder of BuggyLOVE, a family of organic cleaning products designed specifically for strollers and gear, it gives me such peace of mind to know that Bumbleride is always evolving their green footprint by using non-PVC plastics, bamboo fabrics, SPF 45 canopies and, of course, that they recommend BuggyLOVE to clean and maintain their rides as a way of saving time, electricity and water.

Our stroller is such a big part of our everyday life.  It let’s us live outside more. It’s a snack-time seat at the park, naptime bed on the go. It’s our moving office, our backpack and diaper bag carrier, our tired feet saver.  It’s a Disneyworld tested Godsend and survived the mall during holiday shopping.  It’s survived formula, smashed bananas and smeared sunscreen (thanks BuggyLOVE!). It’s as active as we are, essential and uniquely us.

Oh and according to Chloe, it has a pink lined canopy.  Sold to the lady with three princesses.  Now if only it came in rainbow glitter too =)

THANKS BUMBLERIDE!!!
