We recently returned from a visit to our factory in Taiwan where we were putting the finishing touches on Indie 4 and inspecting our first shipment headed for the German Market. We had some time to talk to the owner of the factory about manufacturing in Taiwan over a few cups of tea which is elaborately carried out at least two times a day. We thought it would be good to share why we manufacture in Taiwan when the majority of strollers are made in China.
The factory that we have been working with since we founded Bumbleride is a family run factory in southern Taiwan. The father and owner of the factory started in the stroller business in the early 80’s when his children were still young. Stroller manufacturing was booming at the time in Taiwan due to the quality of craftsmanship, which it is still known for today. In the 1990’s and into the early years of 2000 manufacturing was making a shift to China to save cost and although most factories moved to China they decided to stay In Taiwan. What we like about manufacturing in Taiwan is that unlike China where huge factories that encompass all production exist, in Taiwan our factory uses over 50 local subcontractors who specialize in their field and thus support the local economy. Also, Taiwan is known for its performance bicycle manufacturing with many of the major factories based there. Because of some of the parallels in components, engineering and design we find we are able to leverage not only these but the highest level of production quality. We also make sure we save time to have a few local little ones stop by for product testing.
