Stroller Maintenance 101

Stroller Maintenance 101

We often find that our customers are surprised when we talk about stroller maintenance. For busy parents it can be tough remembering to take care of their stroller, however it’s good to remember that a stroller is not much different than the bicycle in your garage. The tire pressure needs to be checked regularly, the chain and the wheel axles may need some lubrication from time to time. So we wanted to point out a few things that Bumbleride owners should be aware of.

General Maintenance

Planning for your stroller’s long haul.

We recommend doing a quick inspection of your Bumbleride stroller before each use. Checking the tire pressure (Indie strollers), attachment points, ensuring that the front wheel quick release is tightened and clamped and that there isn’t anything the way of the brake lever. Remember  that the front wheel(s) should be locked if you are traveling faster than a walking pace or tackling very rough terrain. If your front wheel is having any trouble make sure to contact our Customer Care at 1 800 530 3930 or info@bumbleride.com.

Fabric Maintenance

Keeping the cushion clean and soft.

All Bumbleride fabrics have a water & stain protective treatment that makes clean up easy. We recommend a spot cleaning any dirty areas using either a basic detergent and water solution or Fabric Love (www.buggylove.com), part of a nifty stroller care kit from Buggy Love. All Bumbleride strollers have removable seat fabric that can be machine-washed in cold water with a mild detergent. Make sure to always air-dry the fabric components. Please note that repeated washings will eventually remove the water/stain protective treatment on the fabrics.

Wheel Maintenance

Smooth rolling for years to come.

The most frequent questions related to the Indie or Indie Twin maintenance have to do with the 12” air filled tires. These wheels are essentially small bicycle tires, much like what you would find on a kid’s bike. However each tire needs to be properly inflated to 30 PSI before use. If the tires are not inflated properly there is a greater likelihood that an inner tube could puncture or become misaligned. We recommend checking and inflating your tires every 1-2 weeks, if not more frequently. If your inner tube does become flat, most bike shops stock 12” inner tubes or will be able to fix your existing tube. You can also find replacement inner tubes on our website (www.bumbleride.com).

Lubrication

Greasing the wheels properly

The wheels, axles and suspension all need periodic cleaning and lubrication. We recommend a bicycle chain lubricant such as CleanRide, Tri-Flow or Buggylove’s Wheel Love. We recommend adding drops near the hub and bearings of each wheel. You can also turn the stroller over and drop the lubricant into the back wheel axle where the suspension spring is housed. Doing this on a regular basis should prevent any squeaks around the wheels or suspension. Remember that regular maintenance will keep your Indie or Indie Twin riding smoothly for years to come!

Using the Multi-use Bars Correctly

Multi-use Bars

It has come to our attention that there is a possibility for multi-use bars included with Indie & Indie Twin models (I-110, I-205, IT-111 and IT-305) to be used incorrectly, resulting in a potential strangulation hazard. The multi-use bar has three positions: 1. Upright (to be used with a toddler), 2. Mid (to only be used when installing an infant car seat) and 3. Folded.

Even though Bumbleride’s packaging instructions, as well as labeling on the multi-use bar, clearly explain correct and incorrect use, we are finding that some consumers are still using these multi-use bars inappropriately.

Because safety is of the utmost concern to Bumbleride, we are releasing this clear warning in conjunction with the CPSC on how the multi-use bars are to be correctly used.

The multi-use bars were included as accessories on these models and are not needed for the safety of your child. They can also be removed if desired. Please always ensure that your child is secure using the 5-point harness in the seat.

We just finished day two of the Kind + Jugend trade show in Cologne, Germany. The European market is responding very well to some of the exciting additions we’ve made this year. The Maxi Cosi Adapters and latching Carrycots are a must-have for Europe and we’re getting great reactions to our new adapters for Indie and Indie Twin. The new Movement and Natural Editions have been getting a lot of buzz as well as our new turquoise color launching later this year. We are looking forward to launching Bumbleride in Europe in 2012.

The Baby Guy NYC meets Natural Indie! See what Jamie had to say and enter to win the ride of your life

August 26th, 2011

NYC

Well, it seems we’ve another stroller to take a gander at today. And look out, all of you fancy European strollers, for a brand that has established itself in the space as a contender of quality has released a terrific new option:

The Bumbleride Indie Natural.

Based on their original Indie stroller, the Natural is a great new alternative for parents wanting a “greener” option in stroller upholstery. The seating surfaces are made of 50% bamboo, which is incredibly breathable, wicks moisture away and is anti-bacterial. I know that bamboo can cause a stink amongst those in the eco-movement due to the processing involved turning it from cane to a fiber you can actually sew with, BUT as a basic source, bamboo is incredibly sustainable. Hopefully, one day there will be better methods to make the whole process more eco-friendly. The canopy on the Bumbleride Natural, as well as all exterior fabrics, are made from 50% recycled materials, which is another terrific feature. I know what you’re all thinking: “Does Jamie like it?”

Yes. Yes. I. Do.

The Indie gives you terrific maneuverability and one-handed steering due to the combination of a height-adjustable handle and 3 12-inch air-filled tires. That being said, I do with this stroller came with an air pump, but finding one is a small price to pay. The Indie is incredibly smooth, and took the terrain of NYC sidewalks and parks with ease. The seat has a wonderful recline that is nearly flat, and is easily adjusted with a strap mechanism to infinite positions between reclined and upright. The GIGANTIC canopy has a peek-a-boo window AND is UVF-45—KICK ASS!!! The leg rest is easily adjustable (a HUGE plus) and allows for lanky kids to sit comfortably due to its low-profile foot support (this allows kids to stick their legs out, instead of keeping them bent, which can mean knees-in-face-effect for tall kids). The fold is quite easy, although not one-handed, and the chassis-lock is manual, but you cannot win them all. Take the wheels off, and it’s VERY compact for a stroller of this class. The rain shield is a separate purchase, but it’s not PVC, which is GLORIOUS!!! The belly bar is included, and Bumbleride has great accessories—including a wonderful Snack Pack that snaps onto the frame that acts as an organizer tray for your wee one. Storage is also wonderful for parents, because the undercarriage basket is huge and easily-accessible. Also included is a Universal Car Seat Strap that makes this a great travel system that works with Graco (Snugride, 32,35), Peg Perego, Chicco Keyfit 30, Combi Shuttle, Baby Trend Flex Loc, and Britax Chaperone car seats. If you’re interested in a Maxi Cosi—OR CYBEX ATON—you can use an option Maxi Cosi adapter. In the car seat department, your bases are covered. ***(UPDATE: Bumbleride doesn’t recommend using the Aton on the Car Seat Adapter Bar–the Maxi Cosi Adapter is different)***

The Bumbleride Indie is a TERRIFIC stroller that is suitable from birth-45 pounds, and at a retail price of around $489.99, you’re getting a well-made stroller and a LOT of bang for your hard-earned buck.

The Bumbleride Indie Natural is available at Magic Beans and other fine retailers.

However, one of you isn’t going to have to pay because you’re getting it for free. The lovely folks at Bumbleride have generously donated this amazing stroller to one of my readers. That’s right—get into it!!!

Nearly 2 million sick and injured children have been treated at Rady Children’s Hospital since it opened on August 19, 1954. It is San Diego county’s only hospital dedicated solely to pediatrics and is the region’s designated pediatric trauma center.

“Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego, loves Bumbleride Strollers. Bumbleride cares about making life easier for parents and their children and that is exactly what they do for our tiniest patients and families at Rady. Bumbleride donates strollers to Rady on a continuous basis throughout the year impacting the quality of life of families with financial and medical needs. Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego thanks Bumbleride for their generosity” said Belinda Lanois, In-Kind Coordinator for Rady Children’s Hospital

Recently a stroller was given to the mother of Ruth Ruiz. Ruth is a 3 ½ month old baby who was born prematurely at 38 weeks gestation, has Down’s syndrome and a cardiac condition. She has been hospitalized in the NICU since birth due to various medical complications. Her parents lack resources and have not been able to buy a stroller for their daughter. Ruth’s mother was very appreciative for this donation!
